BRADFORD, Pa. – Faculty from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford won awards, presented their research, edited books and more over this past summer.

Dr. Nancy McCabe, professor of writing, received awards for her two latest novels. Her comic novel “The Pamela Papers” won the 2024 Next Generation Indies Award for Humor/Comedy and was a finalist in the pandemic literature category. Her young adult novel “Vaulting through Time” was a finalist for the Montaigne Medal, the Eric Hoffer award for YA literature, the next Generation Indie award for YA literature, and the National Indie Excellence Award for YA fiction.

James J. Macfarlane, 62, of Rew, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at his home, with his wife Sandy by his side.

Born April 23, 1962, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Robert M. and Olga M. (Pelino) and Macfarlane, Sr.

Jim was a 1980 graduate of Bradford Central Christian High School. He later earned an Associate’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering Technology in 1982, and a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985 in Petroleum Geology both from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

Catherine M. Cuneo, 76, of Buffalo and formerly of Hemlock Road, St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo.

She was born April 21, 1948 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Victor E. and Mary Margaret Henkel Marconi. Cathy was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired office manager for PennDOT.

On August 14, 1976 in the Sacred Heart Church, Cathy married the late Charles J. Cuneo, who preceded her in death on July 21, 2013.

Bruce E. DeWalt, 69, of Bradford and winter resident of Kissimmee, FL passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.

Born February 26, 1955, in Spring Valley, IL, he was a son of the late Merlin and Dorothy (Landers) DeWalt. His family relocated to Phoenix AZ when Bruce was very young. He attended schools in Arizona.

On October 10, 2024, at approximately 3:31 p.m., State Police were called to State Route 394 and Water Street in the town of Ellicott for a report of a two-vehicle fatal accident.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2015 Nissan Sentra driven by Jacqueline C. Visker, 41, of Kennedy, was traveling east on State Route 394.

During the investigation, it was determined that a 2010 Toyota, driven by Lori L. Maloy, 66, of Warren, Pennsylvania along with one passenger, Virginia L. Maloy, 95, of Sinclairville, was traveling north on State Route 394 when she stopped at a stop sign, then pulled into the path of Visker.

Virginia L. Maloy died at the scene.

Visker and L. Maloy were transported to UPMC Chautauqua for evaluation.

The investigation is ongoing.

Donald P. Trumbull, 77, of Center St. in Clarendon, passed away Thursday (Oct. 3) at UPMC-Hamot. He was born July 8, 1947 in Warren the son of the late Mitchell and Shirley Trumbull. He married Linda Hetrick who survives.

Don had driven bus for many years both Tour Bus and School Bus. He also served in the Marines during the Vietnam War.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Members of the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus unveiled a set of bills aimed at protecting Pennsylvanians by bringing accountability to violent criminals in the Commonwealth.

The legislation is part of a four-pillared package unveiled by House Republicans aimed at combatting crimes in Pennsylvania. Wednesday’s press conference focused on the third and fourth pillars, which cover prosecution and punishment. Other measures in the package focused on prevention and policing.

This year’sFall Antique Show & Sawmill Runwill be held on Saturday October 12th and Sunday October 13th. Northern Pennsylvania typically reaches peak fall foliage conditions around this time so the forests surrounding the museum will (hopefully) be decked in rich and beautiful colors.

The Antique Show features multiple antique vendors that will be selling their wares in the museum program room. Our vendors have a little bit of everything, including antique tools, vintage clothing, collectible coins, glassware, books, and furniture. Vendors open 9am-5pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. There is no ATM on site so plan your visit accordingly.

Outside, the museum grounds will come alive with historic trade demonstrations. Saturday 10/12 of our steam-powered circular sawmill will be running from 10 AM to 3 PM. Other demonstrations will be happening over both days of the event at the birch still, lumber camp kitchen, and the Eastern Loggers model railroad display.

Author Joyce Kieffer will give presentations during the weekend on her historic fiction trilogy “The Trees Remember.” Drawing on the author’s career in women’s health and inspired by the forests she calls home in Juniata County; the series follows a young woman as she trains to become a nurse set against the backdrop of Pennsylvania’s booming lumber industry in the late 1800s. Besides scheduled talks at 11 AM & 2 PM on Saturday and 10:30 AM Sunday, Joyce will be on hand to chat with visitors about her books and what motivated the 84-year-old to become a novelist.

Saw-whet Owl Banding

Northern saw-whet owls are beginning their migration to southern locales and some will be stopping in our area for a well-earned break! Join park staff and volunteers as we hope to capture and band saw-whet owls at Cherry Springs State Park on Saturday, October 19^that 5:30 PM in the CCC pavilion on the Overnight Astronomy Observation Field. After dark, participants will receive a night sky tour as our volunteers check the net traps for birds. Please bring your own chairs and dress warm with layers. Winter Sowing Native Plants

Do you have an interest in planting a native garden at your house or camp? Join park educators and local Master Gardeners at Cherry Springs State Park as we prepare our native seeds for garden improvements in the spring! Visitors will have the opportunity to sow seeds in milk jugs brought from home and the resulting seedlings will be ready to transplant to gardens by the end of spring. Soil medium and a selection of seeds will be provided for visitors to use, but participants must bring their own milk jugs/containers. The park also requests donations of spare milk jugs or plastic containers for garden improvements in the complex. This event will be in the CCC pavilion on the Overnight Astronomy Field on Saturday, October 20 @ 2 PM. Dress with layers! This program is free to attend! Register atbit.ly/milkjugnatives.

·On October 15, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Danika DeCarlo will be teaching a Needle Felting Fall Pumpkin Class.All supplies included.Suitable for ages 10 and up.Students under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.Price of the class $25.00.

·Young Artisans will be celebrating Halloween on October 17 from 3-4:30 with ‘Build a monster’ and ‘Paint a Halloween Lantern’ projects. All supplies and scary treats provided.Price of the class is $25.00.For grades 2^ndon up.

·Gary Perkins will be hosting a night of Oil/Acrylic Painting on Thursday October 17, starting at 6:30pm.Attendees are welcome to bring in process projects.Spend the evening with fellow artists painting.Price of this event is $10.00.

·The return of ‘Witches Night Out: Halloween Open House and Spa Night’, a lady only evening, will be hosted by the Potter County Artisan Center on October 18 from 4-8 pm.Enjoy spa services, live music, free wine tasting and great food.Cover for the event is $15.00. Salem Oak Vineyard will be providing wine tasting for the event.

The Halloween Spooktacular at Lyman Run will be returning this year. The date is Saturday, October 19 and runs from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. As in the past this program is designed for younger children 12 years old and under. The day use picnic area will be magically transformed into the Enchanted Picnic Grove where candy stations will be sent up along an illuminated trail.Fairly lights will be hung from the trees and solar lights will also be used to guide everyone through the grove. Volunteers will be wearing fun costumes instead of scary ones. Cider and cookies will be available at the pavilion during the event which will be rain or shine.

This program is free of charge but free- will donations will be gladly accepted. The program is being hosted by the Friends of Lyman Run- a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation. Everyone who attends is encouraged to wear costumes! Please make sure all the kids have a trick or treat bag or container to collect their candy.
