Motorists heading out on a Saturday faced severe delays on the M1 southbound between J19 and J18. The travel nightmare was caused by planned road works, National Highways said.

Traffic cameras showed a long queue of vehicles stuck in traffic. The organisation warned motorists to allow extra journey time and plan ahead, advising those who can to re-route or even delay their journey.

    Inrix reports that there are still "long delays" on the M1 Southbound at J18 A5 (Rugby).

    There is congestion to Catthorpe Interchange and along the A5 Soutbound.

    There are weekend roadworks, the traffic monitoring service adds, "until the early hours of Monday morning".

    A diversion is still in operation - via exit and entry slips.

    National Highways says normal traffic conditions are expected between 5.45pm and 6pm today.

    There are currently delays of one and a half hours against expected traffic, officials add.

    Other West Midlands disruption

    In a separate incident, there are issued on the M54 Westbound from J2 A449 Stafford Road (Wolverhampton) to J3 A41 Newport Road (Albrighton).

    This includes congestion to routes around Gailey and the A41 past Cosford, Inrix reports.

    There are weekend roadworks until the early hours of Monday morning, resulting in the road being closed.

    There is "slow traffic", and a diversion in operation via the A449 Stafford Road toward Gailey, the A5 Watling Street through Stretton and Bishop's Wood and onto the A41 Newport Road to rejoin at J3.

    This includes congestion to just after the Catthorpe Interchange.

    Traffic near J18 is being diverted on the slip road with the road shut due to the planned waterproofing works.

    The National Highways is urging people to allow extra travel time or consider re-routing or delaying the their journey.

    Traffic expected to continue until evening

    According to trafficengland.com, congestion between J19 and J18 on the M1 southbound is expected to continue for the next few hours.

    It says normal traffic conditions are not expected until between 17:45 and 18:00 this evening.

    The M1 is a key road that connects Leeds to London and is often used by people heading to Luton Airport.

    Delays doubled earlier this afternoon

    The delays on the M1 southbound near J18 doubled at around 1pm, according to National Highways East Midlands' X account.

    The account was previously warning of 60-minute delays but that has now increased to 120.

    On its website, the National Highways is recommanding motorists to allow extra journey time.

    "Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey," it says on its website.

    Delays of two hours on M1 southbound

    National Highways East Midlands is warning of two-hour delays on the M1 southbound by J18 for Crick, Northampton due to planned road works.

    The road works began on Friday evening and are set to continue until 6am on Monday.

    Traffic is being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads.
